Sheriff David Groves releases more details regarding those involved in the Saturday evening Domestic Disturbance call.

Preliminary information reveals three dead in Double Murder – Suicide.
The female caller told dispatch she needed help. Upon the arrival of officers, the woman exited the home and a male suspect, identified as 37-year-old Eli Crawford, shot and killed 27-year-old Taylor Dawn Shutte.

The suspect then retreated back inside with their 2-year-old child, Cessie Crawford.
At that point law enforcement personnel with the Baxter Springs Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office began taking fire from the suspect.

As the suspect continued to shoot at law enforcement, additional assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Joplin SWAT Team was requested.

During the nearly 3 and a half hour assault on law enforcement, an officer was able to return fire towards the suspect.

When officers approached the residence, Crawford and the child were deceased inside.

Per standard agency protocol, the law enforcement officer who engaged the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave.

LThe KBI said when officers arrived, they knocked on the door of the residence, a pull-behind camping trailer.

Crawford is believed to have used several guns to fire over 90 rounds front of the trailer at responding law enforcement officers.

Clesslyn Crawford was just two years old.

The suspect was shot by a member of Joplin police who serves on the SWAT team, the Joplin Police Department confirmed on Monday afternoon

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) said 2-year-old Clesslynn Crawford was fatally killed by a Joplin Police officer during a hostage incident that happened on March 26.

The bureau released its preliminary findings Monday on the tense situation, which claimed the lives of two adults and the little girl. The bureau said the investigation showed Crawford died from a single round fired by an officer after gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and law enforcement, the KBI said in a press release.
At approximately 7:15 p.m., police responded to a call for an ongoing domestic violence incident at a camping trailer in Baxter Springs, Kansas. When officers arrived they knocked on the door, which was answered by Eli Crawford, 37, who quickly shut it after seeing it was the police.

Shortly after, Clesslynn opened the door and ran outside with her mother Taylor Shutte, 27, with Eli following closely behind. Once outside, Eli shot and killed Shutte and then proceeded to fire several rounds at responding officers before heading back inside with his daughter, KBI said.

The officers did not return fire and moved to a safer distance while Eli was still shooting at them. Authorities called for backup from neighboring agencies including the Kansas Highway Patrol, the KBI, the Joplin SWAT Team, and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office to assist them.

For a couple hours, Eli continued to fire at law enforcement officers from inside his trailer, with the KBI suspecting that he had used several guns and over 90 rounds of ammunition. At approximately 9:25 p.m., a law enforcement officer was able to return fire with one round into the trailer, according to KBI.

Claims against the cities of Joplin and Baxter Springs, Kansas, along with Cherokee County in the 2022 death of 2-year-old Clesslynn Crawford, have been settled with the girl's family for $1.5 million.

The city of Joplin and its insurer paid the bulk of the settlement, $1.4 million.

Joplin City Attorney Peter Edwards said the city has a self-insurance fund that paid $100,000 of the city's share and an insurer paid the remainder.

"The council did vote to tender our $100,000 and let the insurance company handle the mediation and settle their liability" that was determined to be $1.3 million, he said.
The city of Baxter Springs and Cherokee County each paid $50,000 toward the settlement because of the involvement of their law enforcement agencies. That brought the settlement total to $1.5 million.

The settlement was approved by a court Nov. 16, 2023.
